We played a few games 2 on 2 with Troy, Dan H. Doug and me. Then Clint showed up and we subbed him in for a game and then Bryan B. showed up and it was on. 3 on 3 action filled the next couple hours. We all had a blast. Tons of laughs, some crashes, some sympathy crashes and much more laughing.

We're hoping to make this a regular Tuesday night deal again and it looks like we will have some more fresh blood, I mean new riders that wanna start coming out.

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

Spring Blossoming

OldGreg and Freshie kicked off the 09 Spring with a house warming party at their new casa de party deck pad on the Southeast side of town this past Saturday. It was a complete blast and I'm already looking forward to next years race. I choose to ride this 12 hr race on a 4man team so I had a bit of a different experience than the other Yazoo team riders. It started raining (pouring actually) around 3am and didn't stop until around 8:30. This was the 4th muddy race out of the 5 I've ridden this year. I couldn't think of a good excuse to prolong riding, so I volunteered to start the race and ride the first lap in the muck.

Muck it was, a slick layer of mud on top of a thick layer of sticky clay. After the LeMans start, the trail meandered through a couple pastures where most riders were trying their best to stay upright and also to ride in the grass and avoid the mud. By the time I hit the single track, my bike was completely full of clay and my derailleur was started to seize up. There were trains of riders walking up all the climbs. We all had a lot of great time for jokes and trail heckling. The clay was so bad it would not come off your tire without a lot of manual labor and people were being stopped going downhill by the clay on the sides of their tires catching in the frame.

Lap times for the mortals were significantly slower than anticipated. I rode a 1:55... atrocious for a 10.5 mile course! Thankfully after the second lap of riders tore through the trail, the clay was getting packed down and the sun was out. By the time I was up to ride my second lap (around 3pm) the trail was buff and in perfect condition. There is nothing like taking 40 minutes off of your lap time, a few hours later. The trail conditions did a completely 180.

It was fun hanging out in all the booths that were setup between my laps. Yazoo had a keg in the Swiftwick tent as well as Terrapin. Dirt rag was setup , as well as Princeton Tech Lighting, Ride for Reading and SORBA MidTN. Local shops were providing pit crews for the pros and Harpeth Bikes was neutral support and had quite a bin full of broken derailleurs and hangers. Sharpie had a great tent placement right near the finish line. I really enjoyed hanging out and watching all the duo and solo riders coming in and going out. Honest, I was quiet jealous watching them ride all day, while I waiting for my chance for a second lap. Next 12 hr race I go to I will definitely have to ride solo or at least on a two man team.

Clay and Grant put on a flawless race and an amazing weekend of fun! You could feel the excitement in the air all day and the awards ceremony was hilarious. I think something like 12 bikes were given away, along with all kinds of other swag. I won a pair of Ergons, a bike lock, and a late-issue Thomson gift card. The party at the campfire after the awards was bumpin' and went way into the night, or you could say the morning. After passing out in some random person's folding chair, I called it a night and hit the tent.

I woke up hung-over but fondly remembering the day before. Got to go and eat breakfast with some celebreties; Curtis Inglis, Ohio Rob, Fuzzy and DJ Birch. Lots of comfort food, great stories and crappy coffee... a great end to a great weekend!!

See you all at DSG 3.0 in 2009!!

Yazoo represents on the South side

Chickasaw Trace race conditions were less than ideal. The race started out with wet spray in my face from the riders rear tire in front of me as we motored down the 'road'. After the muddy drop in by the guard rail it was Tokyo driftin' for the next few miles. Then it got rocky, slick and technical and tough to click in the pedals, the suffering was beginning.

Roller coaster section was a lot of fun, then the trail went uphill. Either I had no traction, and even walking was tough, or I had a ton of traction in the peanut butter mud and my bike seemed to weigh 50 lbs. The suffering had really started kicking in. After a few more roller coaster sections, the other climb was upon me. I looked up and saw a train of 5 riders walking; alright back to struggling even walking in the slick muck.

By the time I finished the first lap, I felt like I'd already ridden two. I got a much needed bottle hand-off from Dan and I tried to recover and drink some calories. The second lap was more rough than the first as the thick mud was clinging to every part of my bike and my body. Strangely I even wondered how I would finish... this is only an 8 mile course. The mud was surely demoralizing.

The Yazoo team was setup by the starting line with tents, beer and socks. Sharpie was spreading the good word about Swiftwicks and Mark from MOAB had the trailer out. We all enjoyed some great Yazoo porter as we got cleaned up and then watched the awards ceremony. Thad showed up determined and won first place with the faster 2lap time of all the classes. Adam (MeanJoe, one of the newest Yazooers) rode very well and stayed on Thad's wheel through the finish line and got 2nd and the 2nd fastest 2lap time.

Every Yazoo rider rode hard, Thad, Mike N, Pumptrack Jim, Adam, Jeff (other newest Yazooer) and myself. Dan, Fred, Sharpie, Greg D., Hillary, Jeanie and PTJim's wife all did a wonderful job supporting us! Conditions more apropos for a winter time cyclocross race vs the first spring mountain bike race. The race and the porter were big hits with all who attended.

Congrats to all of the crew. Adam and I took second and first out of the 26 racers contesting the singlespeed class. I was even able to nab the fastest lap time out of all 2 lap racers, Adam represented well by taking the second fastest lap time, gaining back the 2 minutes I had put on him in lap 1. Nice job Adam! Not everyone had a great race, but I think everyone had a great time. We lived up to our duties as Ambassadors of Fun and held true the team motto "We didn't come to win, but we might".

Thanks to all for coming out to support us and cheer on the racers. It was the 3rd installment of the Snake Creek Gap Time Trial series and the biggest one of the three. the NW SORBA crew had a great race planned and an awesome party afterwards with a live band, tons of food and some sweet give-aways and a raffle.

The Nashville Yazoo boys left for Georgia around 5pm with a yummy pitstop for some Cracker Barrel. We setup camp quickly and joined the campfire party already going on. Thankfully the temps stayed about 35 degrees this weekend so it wasn't as frigid as in Feb. After a few beers and a lot of stories I crashed around 1:30am and tried to get as much sleep as possible. I've yet to be able to sleep well before a Snake race, whether in a hotel or camping. Too much excitement to get unwound quickly.

We were up early the next morning and were welcomed to a bustling parking lot of activity. Everyone was setting up for the day's start, getting trailers backed in and registration started. Bruce Dickman was in attendance MCing the event again so we were treated to his banter all morning. I was on a mission to find some eggs for a solid breakfast so Jason G and I headed to IHOP early. I was determined to fuel myself better this race so breakfast was the best place to start.

We loaded up in Jeanie's box (Element) again and headed to the starting line. We followed the trailers of bikes this time and got to the line before the bus which was nice. We were off by 10:45am and starting the long journey back to the parking lot. I felt good at the start but was nervous about the first gravel climb. I feel into a nice easy pace and tried hard to control my breathing and just settle in for the long haul, determined not to quit pedaling until the top. Conditions were on par with the Feb race which meant quite a few soupy sections and some peanut butter climbs. I made it into the single track feeling great but immediately had to dismount and walk. This section of trail is just too steep for me, coming right off the long gravel climb. I proceeded to walk and ride the next mile or so then rode most of the rest up to the gravel decent.

For the next hour I felt really good and was keeping a great pace. About 20 minutes before the halfway point it occurred to me that I hadn't eaten anything nor drank much and I was getting tired and lethargic. Crap! I started off so well and was crashing. I tried to eat and still keep moving forward. I stopped at the halfway point and got some food down, refilled my bottles and shed some layers. It was getting really hot and I was sweating a ton, definitely over dressed this time. I started up the long climb after the halfway and tried to get my third wind. It took a long time for me to start feeling energized. I was trying hard to continue to get in some calories and drink as much as I could.

When I got to the fireroad section before the grassy gravel climb I was feeling great. I took this opportunity to fuel up and eat and drink while still traveling at a good speed. I started up the gravel climb feeling ok but started to feel some cramps coming on so I got off and walked. When I got to the 8 mile check point I stopped and refilled my bottles for one last time and got my food organized in my short pockets and started back into the single track. For the next 3 miles or so I was feeling great and was keeping a slow but very steady pace through the smaller rocks.

I pedaled on trying to keep a decent speed but not kill myself cardio wise. It just keeps getting harder and harder the more you ride this section so I was slowly slowing down and walking more. I met up with Chris from Tullahoma at the 8 mile marker as we have every Snake. He caught up to me at this point and we rode together with a really tall rider on a Merlin. I believe he's friends with Dan but I didn't get his name. The three of us played leap frog for a couple miles right into the hard section, the Wall. I still can't believe how anyone can ride this steep climb, let alone after riding the previous 28 miles. This is where the walking really begins. Ride a short section, walk a bit, then ride a short section and walk a bit.

When I passed the sign saying 4 miles to go I got this jolt of energy and this idea that, if I push it, I may be able to beat my time. I really had no idea what kind of pace I was on or where I was compared to my previous times but I just wanted to push hard and finish hard. I just forgot about any pain and pedaled hard through this section. I know I was riding sections that I walked previous times and I felt great. This lasted for about 1.75 miles of the last 2 miles then I hit the wall. I had the Tower in sight but it was still one small ridge away. I was spent and devastated as the Tower looked so far away! I continued to walk and push and finally was close to the Tower. Remembering how little trail was left and the lady with the cowbell, I got on the bike and tried to ride out the rest of the trail. I got about 5 pedal strokes and my entire lower body seemed to cramp at the same time. This was the first huge cramp that I had to deal with but it was crippling. I got my foot stuck on a very small rock and just sat there for a second trying to get going but not clipping out. Finally I told myself this was stupid and just walk and I got off and walked out the rest of the trail. There was no cowbell lady and no one to be seen anywhere. I knew it was all downhill from this point and I just bombed it as fast as I could. I flew through the last section of trail and then hit the paved road. I tucked in real small and just coasted down the hill, hoping I was ahead of my previous times. I even rode by a guy on the pavement and waved to him. He yelled "YEA! Get 'em!!" and I was gone.

I pedaled hard into the parking lot and crossed the line completely spent. I felt like I left it all out there on the trail and it felt great! They were busy computing overall times to get ready for the awards ceremony so I looked at the clock and guesstimated my time. I figured 20 minutes faster and I was quite close. 5:27:38 beating my previous best in Jan of 5:50 by 23 minutes!

They gave away red custom top caps to all the finishers of the third race. There was a woman right at the finish handing them out as you crossed the line. I about fell over, still clipped in trying to get off the bike, but I got it! I earned this top cap. I think it's going on the crosscheck and I'll get to look at it during all the hard gravel grinders and know what I'm training for. I'd put it on the singlespeed but I am running the nardguard and it would be wasted under there. It is such a great idea for a prize I bet more races follow suit.

I gotta give a big thanks to the NW SORBA crew and all the volunteers for putting on the best, hardest race I've ever ridden or been to. The support at this race is phenomenal, from the organizers to the racers to the spectators. Everyone that passes you throws out some great encouragement which for me is rare.

Thanks to Jeanie and Hillary for all the support, pre-ride, at the halfway point and after I finished!! You both rock and are very supportive and giving! I'm glad I was able to show Hillary how much sweat a helmet pad can hold and I'm glad Jeanie wasn't too grossed out to take my sweaty jersey. I rode in to the halfway point and they both jumped right up and asked what I needed and what they could do. It was great riding and knowing they would be there at the halfway point.

You can view my flickr set HERE.

The Snake and Magic Socks

If Socks Were Performance Enhancing Drugs, Swiftwick's Compression Sock would be the EPO of the sock world. I normally am a several days before the event packer. I generally pack, unpack, and re-pack until I have everything in it's place. Warm clothes for the night time and early morning preparations. Rain gear for the unpredicted monsoons. Cycling gear, tools, and spare parts. Dog supplies. Flask topped off. What have you. Last week though I had many obligations and time was tight. I didn't get the luxury of a 3 day packing party and to top it all off, it was pouring down rain up until the final packing of the truck. I was pretty sure I had everything. Aside from a plastic knife to spread the strawberry creme cheese on the bagels (thanks for the spork gRant) and a spoon to eat my yogurt (thanks for constructing the cardboard spoon Sexpot Jeanie) everything seem to be covered. That is until I went to change into my cycling super hero apparel. It was then that I realized I'd forgotten not only my super hero tall socks, but all of my socks aside from the Willo 4" cuff ones I'd worn the day before. Well damn.

We (gRant, OldGreg, Mike N. is HOT!, Sexpot Jeanie, Tommy Toughpants, Riley Prancypants, Dish, Po, H., Hennessey, and I all rolled into the gravel start lot for the pre-party festivities of the final Snake Creek Time Trial of '08. Hodge, Phillip, Tim C., and others were all milling about the fire pit. Quickly to setup camp in the muddy swamp (thanks for bringing the plastic OldGreg) and over to the fires with frothy libations from Yazoo for all. Around Midnight people started looking at watches and eyeing tents. Hodge said something about "here's where we really see who's here to race and who's here to have fun". You can't say that and not be drankin', so I pulled out the flask of Templeton only to immediately be one upped by Phillip and his mason jar of clear shine. Bottles passed, swigs swugged, warm fuzzy goodness. The party went on till around 2-2:30am. I blame Hodge's Miller for dousing the party. That tastes like sh*t, especially after drinking killer craft brew all night before hand. It also is what I blame my early race queasiness on. I wasn't hung over, I was sick from bad beer. Friends shouldn't let friends buy and hand you bad beer. Uck.

So, back to the socks. After loading up 6 men, one Fraulein, and two dogs into Jeanie's big orange box, we made our way to the actual starting line. Still queasy from Hodge's poor taste in cheap beer, we readied in line. X-mater showed up and hopped into our line up. Shortly thereafter I spied Harlan Price looking like a lost puppy wondering if he can jump ahead in line. I hollered "gee he looks skinny and fast, you should go up there if you wanna race" and pointed to the front. He looked back and asked if it was fine, most of us in line who were paying attention said sure and waved him on up front. As soon as he started forward we all started yelling "Look at the a$$hole cutting in line" "look at me I'm sponsored". He stopped, kinda turned a blushed red and started to return to the back. We all waved him back up front saying we were only kidding, but as he turned round to line up at the front we laid into him again. Ah, heckling the big boys is always fun.

Hodge, Hennessey, Me, some dude with a beard, X-mater, Mike N. is HOT!, and maybe one or two others lined up to leave. As soon as go was called, Hodge busts a huge 90 degree right turn and cuts us all off. He'd said he was going to do it while riding over in the box, but none of us believed him. We all had a huge laugh sans beard guy who had no idea he was amongst such hilarious joshters. We rolled out, me offering a friendly push to the mater on the gentle rolling hills of the starting fire road. Then a deep creek crossing later I was chasing he and Hennessey up the long peanut buttery muddy fire road climb. I always just settle in there as I'm a slow stoker. Takes me a bit to warm up and if I keep it even steven on that first climb I'm primed and ready to punch it on the single track at the top, where if you get stuck behind granny spinners, you'll burn a lot of energy and waste a lot of time. I was only 3 bike lengths behind the X-mat entering the singletrack, but as soon as I got there he was gone. I looked up the trail to see him extending the lead with Hennessey being long gone. I worked my way up and around and soon passed him on a short but very steep and super slick climb. Oh, and note to self, never put a Vapor tire on the rear. It sucks worse than it does on the front. It was squirely handling on the front, but on the rear it sucks ass in mud; just cakes up and spins.

Once passed the X-mat I started getting into my groove. The section of ridge line trail from where the rocks stop to where the rocky road downhill start (where Phillip stands) is one of my favorite sections. It just flows along the edge of the ridge and you can just motor. I catch Hennessey pushing his bike exactly where he had given me shit last time when I had to dab there. So I made sure to yell out a friendly "What are you doing?" at him as I rode by. Ah, sweet irony! Though he once again ripped passed me on the gravel decent, as he does every time. No worries as there is still a long way to go and I'm about to enter favorite part number 2. Up the piney needle climb then rip down the steep rocky descent to the short water bar section whoops. Cross the road, narrowly avoid falling into the swamp puddle filled with evergreen clippings, and motor up the windy climb until I get to the old fire road section. I LOVE this section. Turn the power on and start flying, almost over burn the same sharper than you remember right hand turn, then down the shoot. Pump track heaven until the final downhill mega fun section leading to the halfway point. I had gotten around Hennessey somewhere before the downhill, but knew he'd be back like a bad penny as soon as the trail pointed down. He caught me in the final descent and hung behind me complimenting me on my recently improved downhill skills. We rolled into the halfway point to roaring cheers from the support crew. Sharpie, Jut, Jamie, H., Jeanie, Tommy & Riley were all hanging out and cheering for us. I stopped to refill my only clean bottle (thanks grunge guard, no more giardia for me). Sharpie was quick to grab it and hooked me up with the precision of a NASCAR pit crew. I bitched about forgetting my socks and muttered something about my legs not feeling like usual and Sharpie pulled out a set of Swiftwick compression socks. Word! Hennessey took off, I stopped to re-sock. Who cares if I'm wasting time, these socks are magic. MAGIC I say! After a few photos taken of me swapping socks mid-race, I high tailed it off and up the grueling climb that starts the last 17 miles. Immediately the legs felt better. Endless climbing legs, that's the feeling the compression sock gives. No dead leg feeling, just power. I catch back up to Hennessey who'd paused after snapping something in his quad. I tell him to turn around if it's bad since the crew was there and it not being worth worsening an injury. He said he'd ride it out to the top and see how it felt. We motored on together for the rest of the race. Me pace setting, him getting out ahead, me catching back, pretty much talking trash, riding killer trail, and having a grand time.

Enter the last 8 miles. Up the gravel road climb from the forest road section is a grade that just sucks for me. I liken it to a false flat with a massive headwind. Too tall to just sit and grind, unless you're one of those power riders (Dicky, we're not) but not steep enough to not be spun out while standing. You get into this annoying rut of sit, stand, sit, stand and grind your way up it. Hennessey being a power rider motored on ahead, I just settled. Suddenly I feel a boost of power and a hand on my back. Bruce motoring by offering a push. A little chit chat and he was gone, soon to repeat the move to Hennessey. I got reports back from many troops who got the Bruce burst. As I crested the top of the climb and made the left hand turn onto the last 8 miles of rocky hell, I heard someone yell for me to just keep going. I yelled thanks thinking it was a volunteer cheering me on, but it turned out to be Hennessey. He was filling water bottles. He was soon back on the train and we motored through the rocks. This section is where it is really nice to have someone with you for pacing and for pushing. You can lose so much time picking away at lines at this section, but with someone to chat with I just motored on. Last time at this point my kidneys and surrounding muscles where aching with pain. Like every bump was a Mike Tyson rabbit punch. This time after 2 months of "training changes" I had no pain and was really enjoying the rocks. Giggling most of the way to the last 3 miles. That's where fatigue set in and I got the front tire bounced around a bit too much. I only had one fall and that was when pushing the bike, damn pedal got hooked on a rock and the bike pulled me over, I tried to catch myself but planted my foot on the edge of a rock and ended up on my ass as Hennessey came up around the turn. Nice timing. Hennessey had been really digging deep and working hard to beat 4 hours. I was working hard too but really only out to finish stronger than last time, that meant no shoulder pain, no back pain, no kidney pain. I was hoping to beat 4 hours again, but it wasn't my goal. Injury free was the goal for me, but at the same time I love a good battle for the finish.

Somewhere in the last 1.5 miles of trail, Hennessey was watch looking and got a burst of angst/adrenalin and blew past me. I hollered up for him to keep his head and not wreck. We were entering the most technical section and with the fatigue factor and calorie bonks eminent, it is very easy to lose a lot of time in this section. Pinch flats, side wall tears, endos, cliff diving are all real possibilities. He roared past and was out of sight (the trail turned right after it crested a short rise). I made the turn only to see him off to the right and him tossing his bike off to the left, narrowly missing eating it. I secretly thought about hitting it and putting a gap on him as I'd have a good chance of making a break if he was flustered, but I didn't have the gas and wanted to help him break 4 hours. As I passed he threw his hands up and said something about "that's it, I'm back on your wheel". I retorted that he had it in the bag if he would just keep his head. He had my wheel to follow and the final 2 miles are all down hill. He can drop me faster than a fancy china plate on loose gravel downhills, so as long as he didn't flat, bust a bone, or panic, he was golden. We motored on trying to regain lost time and eek in under the 4 hour umbrella.

He started to get down about being over time, I told him it wasn't far now, he said something about another ridge still, but I pointed up and low and behold was the rock wall. I stepped over and told him to get it. Short climb out, all down hill. I hit it as fast as I could without sliding all over the loose gravel turns, and spun my way down. He nipped me by about a minute gained in the downhill. Well deserved and hard fought. I was proud. I was also extremely happy with my bike. Three runnings of the snake and not a single flat, mechanical, or dropped chain, or mysterious creaking. When I crossed the finish line, I was greeted by H. and the yowling-for-papa wupples. I nabbed my top cap and headed over to clean up and celebrate with the rest of the racers and our old and new friends (old friends like Hodge, he's old). Dennis and his fast friend, Sam Koerber, had camped next to us and I let them place some beer and food into my cooler, being from Pisgah needing ice is a new thing for them. I get back and asked if he got his beer and he told me he "traded me" because "mine was better". Gotta love it. I had purchased close to a $100 worth of Yazoo for the race and I ended up out of Yazoo but with a cooler full of swill beers and cast offs. Luckily the X-mater brought me a nice sampler 12 pack of Highland ales, though those somehow got swiped as well. Thank goodness the ABC Red Brick was stashed in the truck, at least I came home with something worth drinking.

Special note to Terrapin's Team Wake-n-Bake, when are y'all gonna pitch in and help us support the racers with post race brew?
Yazoo: 3 Wake-n-Bake:0
Better step it up Wild Bill and Mr. Stanley

We are at it again.

This is the official (or at least official as it gets) blog for the Yazoo Racing Team. We are sponsored by Yazoo Brewing Company in Nashville TN and a few other fine folks which you will get to know if you keep checking in. This is the place to catch up on the lastest team adventures, races, or just some thing we feel the world should know about. This is not the place for daily rants or updates on somebodies cat, we have our seperate blogs for that (Dan). No, here you are safe from all that daily life crap.

This blog offers a different perspective on riding bicycles, racing bicycles and having a good time while you do it. Our motto "we didn't come to win, but we might" says it all. We are amateur bike racers at their best. No whinning about a fourth or last place finish, heartrate monitors or weighing food for this crew. We are the new-old school, first ones there and the last to leave, we party hard and ride harder. Don't count us out but you probably shouldn't count on us either. That about covers it. Let the tales of the Yazoo Crew begin.

Jut
